Everyday someone fails at something or in our case fails at building the right blog. What do we do then? We either stop blogging, build a new blog, or go in a different direction away from blogging. The important task to keep in mind is to remember your past and the assets you’ve accumulated.

Consider this your second chance if you’ve failed to go in the right direction.

Don’t Throw Everything Away…

Plain and simple right? I’m also not telling you to be a “pack rat”. I’m telling you to not make the same mistakes that I was about to make by throwing everything, that I’ve learned, away.

Think about all the resources, what you’ve learned, and the connections and conversations you’ve had to get you where you are right now. Even if you are going a different route on this second or third or fourth chance those resources, items you’ve learned, and connections and conversations you’ve made will help you start in the right direction. Remember this!

The Knowledge You’ve Learned

Gaining and expanding your knowledge is key. We learn through our mistakes, successes, and by what others do. Learning comes in many forms and can even come in the form of the inspiration or random thoughts we get on a daily basis.

Conversations with People

Whether you are on Twitter, Facebook, Skype, at a conference or meetup the conversations you have (striving to gain something from the other person) hold the best value for you and your blog. Not only do you learn about things, like how they market their blog or write awesome content, but you build a relationship that you can choose to enhance and strengthen or let it diminish.

I vote for enhancing and strengthening the relationships you do build! They can really help you out even if the second chance you do take is not in relation to when you connected with that person.

I could go on and on talking about the importance of remembering those who you’ve connected with because that is how I’ve succeeded to have an amazing second chance.

Resources or Guides You’ve Obtained

Think about all the resources out there where you can learn from others and then always look back at them.

The reality of it all is that when you download or purchase them, you might read them right away or when you do you will act as if they were emptied from your trash or recycle bin. (Yeah I had to … Mac vs. PC) … or if you have a physical resource it might be collecting dust.

Most of us bloggers starting something new and taking a second chance at being successful will not even think about these resources being useful during the development process of your next venture. But, I bet you’ll find them to be helpful to a degree of you not making some of the mistakes you probably made during your first venture(s).

Find and rediscover some of the resources you’ve obtained and actually learn your lesson from them to get going in the right direction instead of doing a U-turn.

Do you want more of this kind of thinking and gather the true of importance of using your mind more in the practice of blogging? Join our free newsletter today!

Own Mental Notes from Observation and Practice

Let’s be real! Many of us bloggers have thoughts that are from our very own observations and practices in blogging. I’ve begun to realize how important these thoughts or mental notes are to my practice. Why are these so crucial?

Your very own mental notes combine what you will most likely find in the resources you have or haven’t obtained by bloggers and the personal strengths and values you do hold.

So, what happens?! We forget about these mental notes because they sporadically happen. My suggestion: keep a piece of paper, your iPhone, or a text edit or notepad document nearby. I’ve learned so much about myself and what I need to do and what I need to avoid doing for my next venture.

Developing Your Personal Story

All of this is great to remember and reflect back on. What else can happen? You can develop your personal story! Talk about your mistakes, be open, tell the world why you went from one venture to the next with all the mental note details.

Don’t throw everything away; you’ll find most of it can help you make the right direction on your second chance. Also know that you don’t need to keep everything either.

What stood out to you?!

Great tips Derek, Mistakes are a part of being human. I remember quote from Garry Marshall,”It’s always helpful to learn from your mistakes because then your mistakes seem worthwhile.”

Also think about trying to find a mistake in what you’ve considered a success to find better success.

Develop your own story, stood out to me. While Reading this on a mobile I discovered the mobile version and asked myself if all your Skins have a mobile Version? Would you Be available To develop a custom Skin for us? We present real Estate and heavily rely on pictures. If you are not available maybe you could Advise us and refer a Designer.

Thanks for this post, it’s an inspiration. i cannot help but think of this amazing line, ‘those who do not remember the past, are condemned to repeat it” We should take the time to learn from our mistakes and realize that all good things take time and patience. Sometimes I wonder though, if it’s worth giving yourself a third, fourth chance? I mean, if you failed so many times before, clearly it is a sign that you should move on and try something new-something you’re good at. Don’t you think so?

Certainly, ever chance you get you should learn from your past and truly figure out why that didn’t work. Was your passion or values not all there or did you not hustle enough to execute on what you imagined? These are things that need to be answered and not duplicated in the next chance.

I particularly liked your prompt to consider how much you may have learned before you decide to give up or throw it away. The learning curve in getting a website together, finding out how to write content and promote the site, is very steep. Not using the knowledge you gain in getting up that curve would be disappointing.
Great post and great site, thanks.

I’ve found the things I’ve learned from the past also help make my true values and passion more obvious.

Very true what you say and I know I should do this. However, I have a habit of not recording or documenting what I did in the past. That does need to change….Now!

I’m glad you realize the importance of recording or documenting what you’ve learned. Gather it all together and then separate what you can use and what doesn’t fit your passion, values, or interest any more.

Here is a similar story

When Sheena Patel told her sixth-form college tutor that she planned to train as a doctor, she was advised to give up the “pipe dream”. Her disappointing A-level results – B, C and D grades – were so far from the A-grades required by medical schools that they appeared to prove the teacher right.

A year later, however, Sheena is one of the successes behind the official table of results for independent tutorial colleges. The 18-year-old resat all three A-levels at the Albany College in Hendon, north-west London, this summer, achieving straight A grades and a coveted place at Queen Mary’s medical school.

Whao! Was God using you to speak to my frightened heart? I was ruminating on the journey I’ve been on for sometime now, Internet marketing and stuffs like that, which has not really garnered any result, and faced with heavy duty work in the office, now contemplating resigning and going into Internet Marketing fully but daily bombarded with so many things that are not yet working, which seem to slow me down, but in all of these I am certain that I can make it good on the net. So, rather than give up I am firing up. Thanks for the post. God bless.

The sub-prime mortgage crisis, which precipitated our economic tsunami, was NOT caused by a lack of regulation. It was caused by social engineers, mainly politicians and special interest groups like ACORN, that forced lenders to lower their credit standards and make loans to people who couldn’t pay them back.

Today everyone has a huge amount of resource at the disposal. internet marketing with blogs has become a full time job for most. I dabbled with it before i left school 15 years ago and made a few hundred out of it. Back then we had virtually nothing like we do today. Take googles adsense for instance. Now all you need is a topic-site which gather lots of visitors and a few well placed adsense blocks and you will start to gain income. Some people really go the mile with this method and make a modest full time income. Why not give it a try if you got a bit enough interest

Yes you are quite right, mistakes perhaps are the lessons for us. Well most important point in your post is that we should not throw everything away. If we take time to understand how much we have learnt from the mistake then we will not be sad anymore infact it will encourage us to give a second try and thats the key to success. Thanks for sharing this nice thought..
