Blog Inspiration and Innovation for the New Year

by Seth · 38 comments

With 2010 in full swing its time to look deeper into our blogging goals and decide how we actually plan on achieving them.

I love goals as much as anyone but nothing irritates me more than goals that are unachievable or unrealistic.  You know the goals to make $1 Million from blogging this year when you currently have not made a single $1.  Or perhaps the already accomplished goals that take little or no effort to mark the task complete.  Then you have the rest of the year to sit on your butt!

This year lets all make 2010 a fantastic year for blogging.  Let learn together, get inspired and build each other up!  The blogging world is huge and the niche or blog topics that are saturated still have lots of room for growth.  We should all be working together to find success this year in our blogs. Reaching our goals requires innovation and inspiration.

At Blogussion we want you to know we are committed to helping you have your best blogging year ever.

Blogging Innovation

I spent an hour today watching a video from Guy Kawasaki about “The Art of Innovation”.  It is a fantastic video to watch for anyone blogging, marketing, or living!  Guy does a remarkable job at not only inspiring all of us to innovate, but to be better.

Watch the video and see for yourself:

Summary of Guy Kawasaki’s Presentation

Now remember these are just a few of the key points he made in his presentation.  My summary is short and not very deep, but Guy’s analysis is far more in-depth and contains case studies as well as a lot of humor.  Guy discusses many more points as well so be sure you are using the summary as a reminder and not your only source.

  1. Make A Mantra — 3 words only.  Do not make it convoluted with words that are not necessary.  Think of what your readers would choose if they were going to pick your mantra for you.  What would you pick for Blogussion?
  2. Change the Curve — You cannot become the “expert” of your industry with only 10% improvements on current industry standards.  You need to improve 10x’s the current industry standard.  For example if you are a communications company don’t try to make a better internet, make the next internet!  Customizing the current industry wont help you become the best.
  3. Don’t Listen to Bozo’s — Bozo’s are the most dangerous not when they are the losers in your industry but rather the success stories.  Never let someone tell you that you can’t do it or your product is no good.  Watching the video is a must to truly understand this.

Innovation requires creating a powerful resource worth buying or using.  Innovation is required for success in 2010.  My idea for helping everyone innovate this year is to offer a few totally free quick consultations through email.   Just let me know in the comments that you want to talk and we can talk about your goals this year in 2010.  Some of the things I would love to offer help with is upcoming projects, mantras, and blog direction.  I would also love to answer any questions.  Let’s innovate our blogs in 2010!

Blog Inspiration

Daniel Scocco at Daily Blog Tips is an inspiration for many bloggers.  In 2005 Daniel made his first blog.  In 2006 Daniel started monetizing his blogs and very quickly realized he could make a full-time living from blogging.  With many blogs producing income and even a very successful membership site, Daniel is a full-time blogger.

Offering lots of inspiration and education for blogging better this year and reaching your goals, Daniel is offering an excellent free resource in 2010: Make Money Blogging.  The free gift is an ebook but this ebook is unlike any free ebook you have read, it comes from someone who is an expert blogger!

Daniel’s main blog has an Alexa rank of 5,000 currently and a Google PageRank of 6.  This ebook is definitely from an expert.   The book contains helpful information about blogging and earning in an easy to read format.  I think after learning more about Daniel’s personal blogging story and understanding his tips to replicating it, his success is a definite inspiration in 2010.

Goal Setting and Achieving

Setting goals is important.  More important then setting goals is setting the right goals.  If you have made goals and feel like perhaps they cannot be realistically achieved then change them.  That’s okay!  The purpose of the goal is to get you moving forward and the distance is less important.

To set good goals you should create an overall goal for the year and then break that down into realistic measurements for every 3 months or month.  This way success can be measured and victory achieved.  If your goal is only for the end of the year it will be impossible to measure and you will lose excitement well before December.  Set short goals you can achieve in no more than 3 months.

Achieving goals requires disciple and dedication.  It also requires a little bit of pain and hard work.  The key is to set the right goal and then work towards it.  To achieve a goal set triggers which inspire you to work on your goal each day.  If your goal is to leave a comment on every post you read then a little sticky note on your monitor might help you do that.  If your goal is about eating less, then a note on the fridge, utensil drawer or cabinet might be another.  Set reminders to help you remember what you want to achieve.

Conclusion

Blogging in 2010 will take innovation and inspiration to achieve your goals and become better at whatever you are doing.  If you want help achieving your blogging goals then let Blogussion and its readers help!  We know you can reach your goals in 2010.

Most bloggers don’t know how to make small goals. They just assume they can make money easily, and this is why they quit blogging after a month or two.

Mantras are fun to make because they can evolve over time as we get more clear about what we really want and how we provide resources.

Hi Seth,
Setting achievable goals, innovation and inspiration is what we all need in order to succeed in 2010.
I’ll watch the video to get some ideas on innovation since it’s so easy to remain in a rut.

Blog inspiration from the success of others like Daniel’s always helps to prod me on when things don’t seem to be moving forward.

I’ll check out your blog too to see what else you have to say.

That’s my best effort for now! Thanks for sharing Guy’s presentation. If people don’t have time to watch the whole thing, the last 15 minutes or so are a must watch.

I’ll have to check out Scocco’s report as well. I’m really looking forward to Blogussion in 2010.

Nice article, Seth!

Watching the Video will help explain much more about what a Mantra is and how to develop it.

Basically it is 3 words used to describe your blog. Kind of a tag line, creed, mission statement, etc.

I’ve had several “goal” articles in the past few months and one thing I usually emphasize is the use of objectives.

Having a goal (strategy) with no objectives (tactics) is really just dreaming and hoping. By creating actionable tasks, progress toward the completion of the goal can be made almost daily.

For instance:
Goal – To reach 100k Alexa ranking
Objectives – Post a new article every day. Write two guest posts a month. Read and comment on 10 same-niche blogs a week.

Many people just make a blog and thinking that they can make an easy money with it the next day. They don’t know that blogging need a lots of hardwork for them to achieve some income from it. Unless you’re playing with black hat.
