Switching Up Your Blogging Routine For Just A Day: What Would Happen?

by Alex · 6 comments

A few days ago, I had decided that instead of carrying out my regular blogging routines, I would take a day off and try to do things I don’t normally do. I personally think that sticking to a specific routine in anything is for too long is never the best for you, because there are always other stuff you can do that may not work with that schedule you set for yourself.

It is also possible that you may find yourself becoming bored at doing the same things over and over again. Blogging is something that is all up to you; you make the decisions when it comes to YOUR blog.

Not all of us do the same stuff every day anyways, we just do what we find is either fun, or easy to do. Of course, sometimes we still miss out on the tedious stuff like replying to comments and constantly promoting the blog for example.

My Challenge To You

Because of so many of us sticking to a certain schedule every day on what we do with our blogs, I want some of you to try and switch things up the next day, or even today as you read this. Do things you wouldn’t normally do, see if they benefit you and how.

I’m not saying for you to totally disregard your whole schedule, but doing something new. There are some things that can;t be ignored and have to be in your routine (like updating your blog).

7 Ideas For Switching Up Your Routine

  1. If you only write once a day…
Take this opportunity to start writing a couple extra blog posts today and saving them fir when you can’t write or don’t want to write. It is always very possible that this habit can grow on you, because of all the time it will save you in the long run.
  2. Get out there even more
Common blog promotion techniques are like blog commenting, forum posting, link exchanges, etc. But if you only do those things, then you are missing out on some golden opportunities. Try to switch promotion techniques for the day if you promote a lot, and find some different ways to advertise.
  3. Ignore something you consistently work on inside of your blog
Sometimes we get caught up in doing one thing on our blog, we neglect to do other things. Take me for example, I am always looking for things to improve my design here. I am never satisfied, and instead of doing other things like adding some plugins or other activities inside my blog — I get caught up in upgrading an already great design.
  4. Do something that involves other people
Try to use social networking sites a little more, and get people a little more involved in your site. You can even dedicate your day to nothing but using social networking sites to promote your blog if you want to.
  5. Do everything you don’t normally do
If there is something on your blog that you always procrastinate on, then take today and do it. Simple and straightforward: Just do it!
  6. Change the way you do something
Consistency is not always the key, you need to experiment with different things. For example, I just realized that it helps me write better to write out all of my headings first, them write my post instead of just improvising the whole way through.
  7. Don’t even visit your blog
Okay, maybe just once. But seriously, don’t go to your blog for the day. Focus on improving your blog without actually being there. Do your best to bring people there without you actually being on the page itself. Sounds kind of interesting don’t you think?

My Routine Switch

On that day I decided that I would not write on Blogussion. Since I have a partner, he could cover for me. Not the case for everyone else.

My regular blogging routine goes something like this:

  • Check Stats (Traffic/RSS/Poll Votes)
  • Reply to blog comments
  • Write a post
  • Promote the post a little
  • Work on a new feature/improve design

The day I switched, it turned into:

  • Check Stats (Traffic/RSS/Poll Votes)
  • Reply to blog comments
  • Comment on numerous blogs

I decided to stop all of my regular things and so something I don’t usually do, and that’s comment on other blogs. This is something that everyone should do a lot, but like I said above — I didn’t promote Blogussion as much, my partner Janith did.

I had a good time commenting on blogs, and I think it now something that I will be doing a lot more to add to my daily routine. I am going to commit to more of these days where I switch things up because of the benefits of doing it all.

Let me know if you are going to try it out, or if you already do have days like this share your experiences in the comments section!

Doing the same routine day in and day out gets boring too. Changing things up can definitely help make you stay more motivated.

Great post, I’m definitely gonna try your suggestions, your routines looks a lot like mine and I feel like I’m getting a bit burnt out, so I need to reevaluate my strategies, also my wife gets tired of me being on the laptop all night when I get home or most of the night, good post
