Blogging With Age

Let’s face it, blogging with age makes us better at blogging

in Fun Stuff

I realized something a while ago, and today I have decided to write about it. Janith and I have been managing Blogussions for almost 6 months now, and both of us have not only had a great time with it, but have became better at blogging in the process. The reason why I think that is is because of having this blog for so long, it just kind of grew on us.

Now, 6 months doesn’t seem like a long time for something right? I feel like that having a blog for 6 months is an absolute accomplishment on our part. Look at us, I am 15 and Janith is 16. We always find time to work between school, social lives, and updating our blog consistently. So with that being said, 6 months seems like a long time doesn’t it? At least it is for blogging, since most blogs today don’t last longer than a few weeks.

Online, having age on anything is always preferred. Domain age, blog age – it all matters because of how it benefits you. Even having a blog for a whole month is a very long time, considering the ridiculously low lifespan of a blog today. With a sense of accomplishment, comes a sense of pride – the best kind of feeling a blogger can feel.

Phrases you will hear from proud, accomplished bloggers

I have noticed, and even used a few common phrases that indicate how proud we are of our blog. I see them a lot, and I am sure if you have had your blog for even a week or two that you have used at least one of these below:

  1. “I have been blogging for X months now, and…
If someone asks you your favorite thing about blogging, or how you first got started blogging, I am sure that somewhere in your answer you will include how long you have been blogging for. Even if it only be for a week or two, I feel that it really says a lot about you if you include how long you have been blogging as any kind of response.
  2. “Back in February, I wrote about…”
  3. “I’ve talked about this in the past…”
Both of these sayings are used when we are referring to an older post on our blog. Now, I don’t know if it’s just me, but the fact that we tend to include the specific date opposed to just saying “the past” sometimes is, again, really showing off our pride for the blog.
  4. “Back when I first started doing…”
A common saying that a lot of use to indicate when we started our blog. You can usually see this phrase in use when you are outlining something that you have personally been through like the mistakes you made, the things you didn’t know, and hardships of your blog. That was all in the past, and that all refers to your blogging age.
  5. “I realized something a while ago”
Look familiar? It is the very first sentence of this post. This one I think shows the most pride out of any of the ones I listed above because it basically says that you have learned something about your niche that you didn’t know before, and you are now going to talk about it. It’s kind of like how in real life when we learn how to do something like ride a bike, or learn how to swim; we inadvertently brag about it.

Do you agree with me that by us saying those on our blogs, we are admitting how proud we are about our blog? What phrases do you often use to show off the age of your blog?

With Age Comes Authority, and Labeling

Once we really get far into our niche, we have wrote about a ton of topics and think we have become really knowledgeable. It’s very true, and usually if we write good content we will become a top blog in our niche, and that means we have a lot of authority.

But of course, it is possible that we get ahead of ourselves and start using labels. We may call ourselves “gurus”, “pros”, “masters”, “leaders”, etc. Age does bring a lot of great things I have said, but it is always possible for us to get ahead of ourselves. Really, anything good can turn out bad due to ego building.

How old is your blog?

So, how old is your blog? How proud of you of your blogs age? Let’s talk about it all, and even where you think your blog will be in the next month, if your blog is going to be there next month!

Hi, I'm Alex. I am a 16 year old Mac Loving blogger and die hard New England Patriots fan from New Jersey. I'm also very active on Twitter, and I have a personali(ish) blog called Asnio. I am the co-owner of Blogussion, and have mad love for this place.

Summary

Blogging with age on your side will undoubtedly make you a better blogger, not only because of the sense of pride it gives you, but you adapting to the routine of blogging and what to do day in and day out.

Key Points

  • Often, we brag about how old our blog is if we have had it for a while. We show it off a lot, sometimes without even knowing it.
  • Some common quotes you would hear from proud, accomplished bloggers: “I have been blogging for X months now, and…" “Back in February, I wrote about…” “I’ve talked about this in the past…” “I’ve talked about this in the past…” “I realized something a while ago”.
  • When we have age, not only do we become authorities in the niche (IF we play our cards right), but we can get ahead of ourselves. It's an ego builder, and a lot of ego isn't always good for your blog.

I’ve been blogging for about a year and a half or more. I started out playing with random topics and eventually I found out what I really wanted to blog about and what motivated me to keep going. My current blog is going to be a year old this coming month, I think. I have to say I haven’t blogged as much as I have wanted to but I’m still learning and I’ve met some new people on the way. On top of that I’ve learned a lot of new things and often have used it as a method in which to sort out my own thoughts when I just couldn’t do it any other way. I have yet to try the 30-day program and start taking some time to blog more often.

Since I’m getting better at writing I realized( :D ) that blogging longer articles adds to the value so much more than back in my “quick and short” writing stage.

I think you’re a great writer and you’re going to go a long way!

Cheers!
Clinton

Almost a year now? Congrats there, I seriously hope I can make Blogussion the first blog I’ve stayed with for a year.

I think that the shorter articles you write can have equal vaue to those of longer articles as long as you jam pack plenty of information into them in a distinct nature. Long articles are always great, but they always hold the greater chance of having useless information and off topic comments. But hey, it’s up to you in the end. That’s just my 2 cents on things. :)

First of all your blog is not at all looking like as 6 months old. This one is looking like as old warrior of SEO war field.

I do believe that as the time pass and you interact with many people read their comments and reply them. Read other bloggers post and share your view with them will make you more focussed and able to extract the juice from anything.

I think same is happening with blogussion as well.

Thanks! We do our best here to make sure that we look at trustful as possible, and one way we thought to do that was use a great, organized design built off of a recognizable and generally awesome framework.

You’re right about blog commenting. I reply to just about every comment here, and by doing hat not only have I started good discussions, but I started relationships with people. In return, it made me some friends, and it brought some people to come comment here over and over again (aka, my friends).

Awesome post. Reading that list, #4 is something I do a LOT, especially when addressing newbie bloggers/webmasters. I suppose it just shows that experience and the fact that everyone was a learner at one stage. :)

Great post. Wow 6 months, congratulations! Hope this blog continues to flourish. BTW, what’s your traffic, and are you planning a newsletter or something new?

@Farrhad Wow an average of 500 views a day is fantastic for a 3 week old blog. What’s your secret?

Thanks man, we are going to certainly do our best to continue the growth of this blog. :)

Our traffic has been consistently at 250-300 UV’s/day and anywhere from 1,050 – 2000+ Hits a day. Not terrible numbers, right? :)

Something new, we are working on a Dofollow Link Directory, some absolutely massive guides, and a newsletter is a very high possibility when we launch everything else first. Expect it all soon. :)

Cool, that’s good traffic. My blog is basically a month old and has 23,000 page views. I only have around 1300 unique visitors, but I have a high page view per visitor.

I loved the picture, I just had to include it. The Blogger logo on it kind of ruins it, but the idea just went perfect with the post!

It’s simple: the more you blog, the better blogger you become.

Besides, with time you publish more and more posts that have SEO value, you create a higher and more loyal readership. With the increase in comments and subscribers, a blog becomes more authoritative for new visitors and they are more likely to follow it and comment, simply because other people are doing it, too.

An interesting question for some of us. DSWM is 1 1/2 years, or at least the domain is, lol. In the beginning of this blog I was quite confused, so many thing have been added, moved and even deleted.

All is good with the world now…

The domain here is pretty old too. Someone else had owned this domain too, I’m guessing a year. So that was cool to have bought an aged domain. It can definitely help us out. :)

Nice post Alex, Blogging always get refined with time.
We always learn new things and soon we pass the stage of noob and then come the real stage of Internet.
If someone is using the right technique to maintain his online identity, after 1-2 year of blogging, people can recognize him from his name or avatar.

I think it’s quite an achievement if someone posted an acronym of your sites names and have people notice it without even you having to say the full name of the site, then you definitely did something right.

It’s like DP. What do you think DP is?

I’m sure DP is DigitalPoint. It is really good to have your site leave at least acronym to everyone.

Wow! Thanks for using my image.

Truth be told I’m not an old guy, nor is my blog particularly old. It’s part of an ongoing-but-fading-out theme of my blog, The Quite Finite Blog, which is part of a Uni study about blogging, recognizing that my blog has a short life span. I think its great that you found a good use for my image, I knocked it up in Adobe Flash to give my blog some character. Gotta love Creative Commons, thanks for crediting me. I’ll direct all my readers (like one?) to your blog, Asnio, which seems pretty cool. (You have more insight into this stuff than I do, considering your age XD)

Ok I ticked a box below my comment. It supposed to link my blog post, but who knows what might happen.

When I first read the title I thought that perhaps you were an old coot like me. :D Then as I read on I discovered that you were actually talking about the age of a blog. I must admit that I was surprised that someone so young can produce such a great post.

As to my blog age, I couldn’t really tell you. My latest one is probably less than a year old and the oldest one several years.
