With over 250,000,000 million active users and counting, Facebook has become the largest social network on the web.
Of course size is great, but what does it have to do with efficient marketing?
Facebook is an outstanding place to build rock solid, bulletproof, lifelong relationships. I am yet to encounter a community where people are more open and ready to socialize with complete strangers all over the world than Facebook.
Internet Marketing is all about relationships, trust and mutual respect. Being able to accomplish that with your prospects is the key to a successful internet marketing business whether you are a freelancer, web designer, blogger or even someone who isn’t yet sure about who he is.
Here’re 10 tips that outline Facebook Marketing in an easy to digest manner.
1. Become An Invisible Marketer. People don’t like to be sold to. People love to discover stuff they want to buy. Become an invisible marketer. Don’t approach people asking to buy stuff from you – they will vanish before you can say “Special Offer.”
2. Be Genuine. Don’t lie. Don’t try to make people like you. Just be genuine about who you are. People can sense it when you’re faking. They will like you for who you are.
3. Be Interesting. Have you ever been to a party where there is a guy who only talks about one thing? All the time? It’s boring. It’s unattractive. Be interesting, fun, outgoing, entertaining, provocative, refreshing and just unique.
4. React To What Others Say And Do. When someone posts a status update on Facebook – react. Comment on links, quotes, jokes, etc. It’s a great way to start conversations that can end up in successful relationships.
5. Add Likeminded People As Friends. Run a search for things that interest you on Facebook. I am not talking only about SEO, Copywriting and Marketing. I am also talking about cooking, cars, sports, websites, cities, etc. Connect with like minded people – that’s what it’s all about!
6. Be Picky. Facebook has a limit of 5,000 friends per account so don’t just add anyone, pick your friends wisely.
7. Add No More Than 50 Friends A Day. When you are just starting out to build a following on Facebook, don’t get carried away. Don’t add more than 50 friends a day or you will be suspended. Facebook is very strict about user interaction – don’t upset the Facebook Gods.
8. Have Fun. Do I need to explain myself here?
9. Don’t Get Carried Away Playing Games. Facebook is full of distractions. It is easy to lose yourself playing Mafia Wars or visiting Farmville. Don’t get carried away. Always remember your agenda.
10. Create A Following. Start a group or a fan page where people can sign up to follow your updates.
I want to sum up this post with the best tip I can give you – DON’T SPAM. Never SPAM. Don’t even think about spamming the feed wall.
People don’t tolerate spammers. When you annoy someone on Facebook, the only thing he needs to do is to press a little “Hide This Person’s Updates” button and *POOF!* – you’re gone. They are never going to see your updates again. EVER!
Your primary goal, when interacting on Facebook, should be to build relationships. If you want to do better than 90% of most Facebook marketers, just follow those simple guidelines.
Forget about marketing, be genuine, have fun and you will notice a dramatic increase in sales within weeks.

Nice job, Igor! All 11 tips can be applied to Twitter and other social media platforms as well. As a facebook user, I’m still hesitant to try and market my website to my friends. But it is becoming more socially acceptable.

You’re absolutely right! People love to talk about themselves. They’ll like you if you ask them to talk about themselves. At which point (unless they’re completely self-absorbed) they’ll ask you about what you’re doing. Then you tell them.

To me Facebook is much more or less like twitter, as in communicating. But one good thing about facebook is people are more in commenting and communicate with each other more then twitter which is a great thing if you want to build good relationship.
But again Facebook had it’s limit, I wonder why it limit a 5000 for?

I never thought of using facebook to market myself. It just dose not seem like a website where you can do that. It;s more for friends. Ill have to try this way and see how things turn out

I understand your points and advice – they are great. But how do you actually go about *selling* on Facebook – is it simply by posting a link on your wall every now and then to your blog posts or an affiliate link?

I think the way to do it is by letting everyone know what you do. You don’t need to be “selling” all the time. You just need to be helpful, interesting and honest. Then when someone needs something they know where to find it, and how to share your info. too!
I have found some great collaborations with friends that I never knew worked online through facebook. Just be honest and open and stay sincere.

Great Post! I was shocked to discover that everyone has their own preferences when it comes to social networks. Some people Prefer Myspace…and some people hate twitter and myspace and only do facebook..So i made a effort to really try to join all of them, Another thing that is helping people is adding their Subsribe to us boxes on their Facebook pages, I am going to set mine up ASAP.
Uhh well I liked the article and I think that it will work for sure, just like… I don’t like this idea of getting friends then suggesting them something and it spreads like that.. Generally do not like the idea of getting friends for the mere purpose of marketing… =\
But you are right, i probably will not do it and will not spam there as well… But I can say that it may work wonderfully if your friends are your target market to the point where they can tell their friends, etc
It’s not about getting friends for the sake of selling. It’s about being there when your friends are in need of help. Can you feel the difference?

Facebook marketing is a great way to market products but facebook is now cracking down on FB pages used to promote stuffs _
I think Facebook will play an increasing role in Internet marketing. Facebook pages are there for companies and public figures to promote their stuff. Same for Facebook ads. Just don’t do your marketing on your profile, that’s bad style.
As for making sales, I think you’d have to set up a funnel for that on your FB page. At some point, your visitors need to know that you have something for sale. Need not push it down their throat, but the option has to be there.
