Today I decided to switch things up a little bit. Instead of me taking a question and answering it myself, I want to ask you guys a question and have you answer it.
This might seem like a weird kind of question to ask, but if you really look into the word then you will see that it’s not really an odd question at all.
We all blog for different reasons and have different purposes on our own blogs. So with that in mind, the definition of blogging can be different depending on who the person is.
There are many uses for blogs, and while some may be more practical than others, all blogs have some kind of purpose. The most common types of blog purposes I see are:
- To Teach Someone Something
- To Blog For Fun
- To Connect With Others
- To Make Money
- To Learn
The most common blogs around, the people who blog to talk about a certain niche. Take Blogussion for example, this is a “teach someone something blog” as blogging articles and tutorials are posted here.
Many people just enjoy blogging and don’t really care who is reading. Most of these blogs “just for fun” can be classified as personal blogs, but aren’t limited to just that field.
Blogging is a great tool for meeting new people. I can’t tell you how many great people I have talked to that I have met through my blogs. I make friends with a lot of people who comment on my blog, and we just have a good time conversing about the topic.
A bad road to take, but there are people who don’t get it. I see blogs that are strictly there to make money. Stuff like AdSense, Banner Ads, Text Links and more usually fill those blogs.
Maybe we blog to learn new things more than teach them sometimes. If you’re a blog about teaching someone something, then you probably have a lot of knowledge in the field. But there are always things you can learn, no matter how much experience you have.
All of those things tie together in the end, which makes this question even weirder I think. You can say that you blog to teach people something, but at the same time you are connecting with others, learning something, doing it for fun, and even somewhere down the line – making money.
I’m Very Interested in What You Have to Say!
I think your opinion on this question will be pretty interesting. I have basically dissected the question a little, now all it needs is your opinion.
For the most part, I think many answers will be similar. But, I do think that there are more “deeper” thinkers out there who see a blog more than just a place to write posts and make money.
So don’t be afraid to post, there aren’t any wrong answers! If this gets enough interest, I will post my interpretation for sure.

Sounds like a good time to me. :p
That’s a very good question you’ve raised Alex..but I would have to say – for that community feeling of bringing people together
That’s one thing I feel the same about on this blog, and I think we’re doing a good job of it!
It can be as a time pass too. I blog as a part time work. Its fun and much more.

Blogging passes so much time! I’d love to turn a blog into my own work place one day, that would be a dream job for sure.
Aside from strictly personal or strictly MMO (the dumb kind), a blog should be a combination of all 3….learning, teaching and connecting. If you drop one or another, I don’t think it will work very well or for very long.
Dennis Edell’s last blog post..Would Even The Slightest Hint Of Porn Stop You From Advertising?
Good insight Dennis. Unfortunately a lot of MMO blogs are the opposite of that as you have said, but at least we know not to read them!
according to me each person define blog according to its requirements .every person has its own purpose to blog . For me it is to learn and to earn money
offtopic :- congrats alex you blog got toolbar PR3 now
That’s exactly why I wrote this post too, because everyone uses their blog for a different purpose.
Yeah, I’m pretty happy about PR3. It doesn’t mean much, but it’s always nice to have some PR!
Hi Alex, I’ve been so busy lately that I didn’t have time to comment or read anything lately!
Ultimately I owe to believe that most of the people who blog expect to make some money out of it, be it a little bit or a full time income.
Now, the true is this can’t be done unless your blog carries another purpose, any blog that makes money offer some value, usually teaching something.
I hardly believe that some people will spend hours daily on their blog for the sake of making new friends only, and even personal blogs usually have advertising on them…
I know how it can get! I have exams this week, and a blog to manage all by myself. It’s not easy!
