How Making Money Blogging Has Been Looked at the Wrong Way by Thousands of Bloggers

by Alex · 84 comments

Aren’t I just full of revelations this week? On Monday I talked about the degration of quality content, and now I want to share why I think many people are looking at making money online incorrectly.

Before I begin, I just want to let you guys know that I’m not making six figures online and that I do have some ways to go before I start earning enough to support myself. But, I do feel that for a 16 year old, I am coming up with some pretty decent money from my online ventures. And I can do it because of how open minded I am becoming on the topic.

Earning Directly is not the only way

A common misconception with new bloggers, and even bloggers who have been at it for months is that with any blog, you can earn directly from your blog. While that’s true in some cases (mostly for niche dominating blogs), that idea can often hold many back from real money making opportunities.

A blog that earns directly is usually doing it using one of the following methods:

  • Selling advertisements
  • Affiliate sales
  • Sponsored posts

There are other ways to directly making money blogging, but these are the most common ways.

The Problem with Direct Earning

Earning income directly from your blog is great as it is usually recurring, and takes less effort to continue in the long run. But, it’s extremely hard to earn large amounts of recurring income directly from your blog.

It is hard in many ways, and many factors revolve around it. But the one problem that I want to stress here is time.

The amount of money you make blogging depends on your community, your community depends on the quality of content, and writing massive amounts of content takes time.

Time is what makes earning direct income so difficult. While some have more time than others, many of us need money quicker and unfortunately have been taking the wrong approach: the direct approach.

Serious Alternatives for Serious Bloggers

While you should always be looking to earn money directly from your blog at some point, you should try the next best thing: earning indirectly.

This is how I make money online. I don’t sell ads and I don’t write reviews very often. Instead, I am starting to branch out with three alternate ideas below.

1. Offering Services

This is the primary way I make money online. A service would be anything related to your niche that you specialize in. The greatest thing about this money making method is that it can apply to any niche. In some, you have to be more creative, but I promise you there is a service in anything.

The service I have chosen to offer is what I enjoy doing and specialize in — customizing the Thesis theme for WordPress. In other words, freelance blog design.

Freelancing is a very common service to offer, and a blog is just the thing you need to kick start your freelance business. As bloggers, I think that when many of us hear “freelance,” we associate it mostly with designing and other web related services. But you can freelance anything — lawn services, cooking, writing, etc.

There are plenty of other services out there besides freelancing of course. It’s up to you to mix your ideas, goals and your niche into what you want to offer as your service. Once you come up with it, start it up and use your blog as a gateway for customers.

2. Offering Products

Selling something that will provide value to your readers in one way or another is a great way to create indirect, recurring income. Use the right marketing techniques to promote it, and you may find a very strong income source.

Products are not something just anyone can do. You have to have a talent you are extremely good at to pull it off. I myself am finding this out as I work on a product of my own for Blogussion that I hope to launch this month.

I find selling products so great for making money for the following reasons:

  • Once you are finished setting up the product and finding a system to sell it, it generally requires little attention to keep it going. This of course depends on what you’re selling.
  • The product will sell over and over again at the same price, which can keep income consistent.
  • You can offer as many products as you want, and they will all add up rather nicely if you continuously offer value.

This is the money making plan I am most excited for doing myself, and can’t wait to see the results of it in the near future.

3. Membership Sites

A little while ago, an article was published here that went over the basics of creating a membership site that had me thinking more and more about the possibilities of starting a membership site and how much one could possibly earn.

A membership site is basically an exclusive area where only people who pay you can get access to. If you can come up with great enough content where the only people worthy of seeing it are ones that are paying to see it.

Take Yaro Starak for example. He is the man when it comes to setting up a successful membership site. Him and the content he offers are so great, he made a membership site about creating membership sites. The people he has taught have earned ridiculously high amounts of money in little time.

Membership sites have such a high capability to explode and earn you some pretty good money. But of course, this is probably the hardest alternative to successfully do and requires a lot of work and maintenance along the way.

There trade-offs are there people, what do you think about membership sites as an alternative to the other two methods listed in this list?

What Fits You?

There are some great ways to make money blogging in this post, and which way do you think is the best for you? Or, what is the best working for you already?

The main point I wanted to get across to you in this post is that your blog has the capability to work for you and jump start revenue streams without earning it directly from your blog. Of course, multiple income streams is vital for more consistent income, and you should always try to find ways to earn money directly from your blog.

The ideas suggested here are to just help you with ideas and motivate you to start acting now, rather than waiting for banner ads to sell or affiliate links to get clicked.

Earning money blogging can be done in a variety of ways. However, many bloggers don't realize the potential that is out there to expand and do something great to earn through different strategies.

  • Key Points

    • Earning money directly from your blog is a great way to earn, but it is very hard to earn recurring income directly from your blog.
    • To earn directly from your blog, you would be doing things like writing sponsored reviews, making affiliate sales or selling advertisements, for example.
    • Offering a service that you specialize in is a great way to earn money by the hour, or however you choose to setup a payment plan.
    • Selling a product on your blog requires an extreme amount of effort to create, but once you start selling it, the work load tends to die down.
    • Creating a membership site requires a massive amount of work to setup, maintain and adding onto. However, they have the capability to explode and earn very well if you approach it the right way.

I agree that there are many more ways to make money from a blog by publishing ads. I actually only started placing ads on my blog a couple days ago.

A make some money indirectly from my blog by designing websites. In addition to examples of my work, I also show clients a couple of articles and tutorials I have written. Also, when I get around to it, I will actually add a portfolio page, instead of just sending them a list of links :P

But my main goal with my blog is not to make tons of money, but mostly to learn more about web development, and to share what I learn with others.

Not everyone blogs for money but if you can make a few dollars then why not!
For some bloggers its only the money and it shows through their design and content. Its a kind of distraction.

Must admit that I love your classification: direct and indirect earning from blog. But I think indirect earning is far more difficult for new bloggers since they have to build a great blog first, then people start to use their products or services.

Sorry, I don’t think that’s true. I know first hand that you don’t need to have a thriving blog, but you need two things:

1) Execution
2) A little marketing

I started this blog in December, and ever since that my freelance business has been very steady. I offer design consultation, and before this blog even had 50 subscribers I was getting work.

I don’t mean to kind of put you on the spot here, but I know first hand that your blog doesn’t need anything bu your absolute best to start yourself for indirect earning through something like services.

Yes, I’m with Senthil Ramesh on the offering of services. Not only does it sound like a great alternative to the Direct methods of earning money through blogging, but it might be a lot of fun (and hard work ;) )
The fact that there’s some direct form of interaction with readers and customers makes it very appealing as they will get to know you better; community bonds tighter.

As you also said, Alex, there’s a service to be offered in every niche.

Thanks for the super serious alternatives. Time to get brainstorming…

I’ve been running a membership based website since 2007, a year after launching my travel blog. It’s offering ongoing income stream (though it requires a total revamp as activity has drastically dropped) and its not related to blogging. My travel blog is mainly monetised through selling advertising space which is an ongoing struggle…I’m looking at other revenue streams outside banner ads, have already introduced a jobs board which is yet to pick-up…i’m also toying with introducing a classifieds facility, where my users will advertise their special/promotional offers which they currently send me as press releases and I ignore them, since that is not news worthy for my readers.

Good luck with everything, and I’m really glad you said all of those things because it shows me that there are much more ways than just services, products and membership sites to earn indirectly.

As I write this reply, I’m busy plotting my next move for tweaking my travel blog and the membership website. Passion alone, unfortunately cannot pay the bills, therefore improving my revenue streams is also important for me to sustain myself.

The great thing about blogging is that there are so many ways to earn an income. Having multiple revenue streams and closely monitoring what works can be fun and exciting.

Personally, one thing I have no intention of even trying is a membership site. Although it has worked for some of the gurus, it’s not the type of work I want to feature even as my site grows to ginormous proportions. Who knows, I may change my mind one day.

Hey Alex! I’ve always been impressed with your determination to do things right. Selling ad space, affiliate links and other direct money-making techniques aren’t as sustainable as creating a resource that people will want to use and eventually pay you to use.

Copyblogger is one of the best examples of this. Brian uses that site to sell himself and his other services. And if I recall correctly, he made $2.9 million last year.

Plus, there are going to be more and more opportunities for freelance Internet services over the next few years. Having this as a successful blog will place you above and beyond most of your competition.

Nice job!

I’ve been reading bloggusion for a few months now and it seems, at least lately, that you are a little bent towards not earning directly from a blog.

Time is what makes earning direct income so difficult. While some have more time than others, many of us need money quicker and unfortunately have been taking the wrong approach: the direct approach.

I would say that this is not exactly right. Some might even say that this is exactly wrong, unless, you are trying to “directly” make money from a blog about blogging, a blog about making money blogging, or just about every other iteration of that theme, sadly, one that too many hang their hopes on.

You are absolutely right when you say that good content is required component to making money directly from a blog, however, I think that you significantly overestimate the amount of good content required and the time required to create it.

As important as good content, when monitization is the goal, is a well researched market which gets ample search engine traffic from visitors with a positive intent to purchase that isn’t so saturated that your good content hasn’t a snowball’s chance of getting to the top of the SERPS.

Long story short, if you find a good niche, making money directly from a blog is not nearly as difficult as those trying to do so in a bad niche might think.

That’s just my two cents…

Even though I disagree with you a bit, on this topic, blogussion is a great read with a lot of insight from someone as young as yourself.

I see that most of famous blogs like problogger, copyblogger, John cow’s blog their main earning is selling ad space. I think this is the best blog income source. We can not guaranteed that we can sell affiliate products, some time might be we can sell some products but we can not guaranteed that we can sell products continuously. So for me selling ad space is good blog income source.

Do you have a page where you sell your thesis design services or is it more of a contact/behind the scenes deal. I’d imagine you’d get a lot of people contacting you about your design as it is quite stunning.

I purchased the thesis theme a few weeks ago and still haven’t gotten around to really playing with it it. I plan to soon and can’t wait to get to know it back to front as I’d really enjoy doing up some custom designs of thesis myself.

Hi,
I think A blog is like an always-on e-newsletter – offering real time information and giving readers the opportunity to add comments for all to see.Blogs are search traffic magnets. Seeing from the wholly technical perspective, blogs are actually just content management systems, and just by writing an article a day, a business can very quickly build up a massive blog archive packed with keyword rich articles!

Well nowadays finding a niche is like finding a needle in a haystack hidden on the dark side of the moon. While i agree that freelancing is one way to generate some income, i think that the best way remains in getting profit from sales through your personal blog.

For me, I am working in the opposite way. I currently have products that I sell, but I want to be more transparent as a company. I really want to give my company that human spirit.

Honestly, I think if someone is getting into blogging expecting a monetary concern on their investment, they are making a mistake. I am fairly new to this whole blog gig, so maybe I don’t have the authority to say this. But I am of the mindset that I’ll get totally burned out and frustrated that ‘not enough is coming in’.

Well, if I’m serving my purpose and really giving something of value, then why do I need money to validate my worthiness as a blog presence? I’m sure it’s really nice to have that stream of extra income, but I’d rather change someones life.

Now, a blog and a product on a blog (indirect money) is not a bad idea. Recently I purchase ProBlogger’s 31 Days to Building a Better Blog. It’s awesome, is a great product, and was well worth it.

I am currently investigating some methods that I can share something of great value with people, at a small cost.

With that said, I will continue to keep blogging and just having fun!

…keep blogging and just having fun!

That’s the key!

For monetizing your blog to full potential you will need to create a strong community. and as you very well said: “Human Touch”

I can’t remember where I read it (Copyblogger or ProBlogger) that Blogs DO NOT make money, business makes money. If you want to make money out of your blog, think your blog as business or better. Think of your blog as resource for business (think: realtion b/w ProBlogger and ProBlogger’s 31 Days to Building a Better Blog.)

I think it was Pro Blogger that said that.

Although I am doing this for the shear fun of it right now, I’ve learned that treating it like a job and making sure I get something done with it each day is key.

It’s now taking 2 to 3 hours of my time each day between writing content, coming up with new ideas, and studying ways to improve what I’m doing.

It’s been a blast so far, and Bloggusion has helped a ton!

Thanks for the link.

Since every person is different, each will have a different way to make money from blogging. The key is to enjoy blogging and never give up.

I am trying to break the habit of saying “great post”, but this really is one. I can see how earning directly from a blog can be difficult, but also how earning indirectly poses some real potential.
I have to assume that with a site like this, both in content and design, there have been plenty of other offers of employment. There is no better resume.
Great job.

Alex,

Speaking from experience…

What inspires a blogger to blog is exactly what inspires a musician to play music.

When you know that the real reason why you do what you is based more on passion then anything else.

Making a living in both blogging as well as in music can only mean one thing…

Do not quit your day job.

You are one gifted individual, Alex.

Hey Alex,

These are some great tips. This blog inspired me to open my blog completely advertisement free.

I actually started my blog with the intention of running a membership system so hopefully I can work out that soon. Having products is also a great idea but it’s often hard to find niche fitting products. eBooks are by far the most popular blog product but something a little more unique would certainly go a long way in promoting a blog, and increasing revenue.

Finally, don’t quote me on it but I believe the correct word is “degradation” (see opening sentences), :)

I have an automotive blog, but nobody seems to be interested in it. Well, the design could be better which is why I’m too embarrassed to link to it. Aside from the occasional adsense click, it earns nothing. Guess I have a lot to learn whic is part of the reason why I’m here. Hopefully one day I will be able to expand my revenue from the blog, but for right now its just an unpaid hobby.

I really should start making money from my blogging. In a way I have done this indirectly since 2004. My video game law blog helped me earn a summer position in an boutique entertainment law firm. My blog about online stuff (Mintz’s Wordz) helped me land the current job with a major corporation. And my newest project Lurkers Anonymous: Motivate and Engage Online and Everywhere Else is something I hope to turn into a book … and sell. So while I have never made a dime selling Google adwords or ads or anything else like that, my career has been built on blogging. Most important, I love doing it and would do more of it if I had the time. Maybe if I start making more money from blogging I will!

I developed a site (since sold) that was product based – an ebook on selling books online. Though my earnings were solid I have I found selling the site t(and rights to the product) o be most profitable – which is something to think about starting a site.
I have also found adsense and niche sites relatively easy to set-up and quickly generatiing revenue as once you have a system down for developing the sites it can be done rather quickly.

Aren’t I just full of revelations this week? On Monday I talked about the degradation of quality content, and now I want to share why I think many people are looking at making money online incorrectly.

Agree that there are more ways to monitize a blog. But there are also other *types* of blog as well. The die hard blogger will be pouring his heart out blogging about his passions. To these guys, putting out hundreds of posts on their subject isn’t hard work but a pleasure. Whereas, the guys who are out to make a few bucks need to write a minimum amount about a popular subject, throw a blog up and then SCALE it up massively. So they end up with a network of micro blogs. Even if each blog only does a couple of dollars a day, they can soon make a pretty decent living.

great point Alex! I think most of the bloggers want to make money but they directly start using ads and affiliate links. I think once your blog grows you will automatically get ideas on how to make money and also people will contact you for things.

I believe that blogging is all about scale. Either have one or two blogs that have thousands of pieces of good authority content, and make your site the first port of call or have hundreds of sites that are well optomized for the search engines and try to get as many of them as you can in the first ten of Google, each bringing in a couple of bucks.
