Get some comment love for your static website

by jitendraag

If you have a “static” website that doesn’t dynamically update with RSS feeds, then you could be missing out on some traffic benefits. In this post, Jeet from Get Links Pro goes over how to make your content RSS feed accessible so you can use CommentLuv to promote your pages.

RSS was one of the most hailed technology 2 years ago. It promised to change how we read news, and how search engines determine new content and of course it completely changed how newsletters work.

The folks at CommentLuv used this powerful technique and made an amazing plugin that facilitates rewarding blog readers and commentators in a whole new way. Before this, blog commenting was not as exciting and an attempt to get a keyword rich backlinks to your site using blog comments was considered SPAM. Backlinks to internal pages on the blog was a distant dream.

However, CommentLuv changed that. It inserts commentators latest blog post with title in comment and thus rewards loyal readers and commentators. It uses an RSS feed on the blog to find the latest blog post.

But, what if you don’t have a blog, but a manually updated (static) website? Blogs get an extra link whenever they leave a comment because they have an RSS feed setup already. I will share a trick here that can be used to get an extra link for any site on CommentLuv enabled blog even if you don’t have a blog so to speak. I am using this trick for my directory list, and it works fine when CommentLuv is around.

Creating the XML file

The first step is to make a RSS feed file called feed.xml (or whatever you want. Just make sure the file extension is .XML) using the template given below. Choose a good title for your page that you want to show up in comments, it need not be same as the actual page title.

You should keep minimum 3 items for CommentLuv to recognize your RSS feed. You may choose to add more RSS tags like author, publish date, website title/URL etc.

Free Directory List

Title 2

Title 3

Once you have made this file and have uploaded it to your server, you need feed auto-discovery process to recognize your feed. Assuming you uploaded the file at www.domain.tld/feed.xml you need following code in your homepage header.

You may choose a different location or file name for the RSS feed we just prepared and should be substituting the RSS URL in following code accordingly.

Upload this change and you are now ready to get more than one link when you comment on CommentLuv blog. You can get links to any internal page you like. If you know a little bit of programming, you could randomize the link that will appear on the RSS feed.

If you have a blog on a separate domain or in a sub directory, you can also use the auto-discovery code on your main site to enable RSS discovery.

You could also register at CommentLuv and choose the feed to show for your comments. But nothing will give you as much control as this.

I like both comment luv and keyword luv. I prefer to use my name while commenting but these two plug-ins help in getting keyword rich backlinks and if the title is good, I click on comments ( like Great SEO Quiz) :p

I always do these things to my new blogs because it encourages visitors to leave comments and interact with the site :)

When it comes to making your whole blog Do-Follow, there is a negative side to it – SEO wise. But it’s well worth the sacrifice.

Especially on new blogs, that haven’t even been around for a PR-Update, the benefits of making it do-follow seriously outweigh the negatives.

Good luck with your blog! Hope the changes bring in the goods :)

Janith: Good point, dofollow is really good for new blogs. But I keep it on old blogs as well. I have to put an extra effort in approving / rejecting comments but it’s worth the effort.

Maybe another blog post from you guys about pros and cons of going dofollow :)

I’m thinking about adding CommentLuv to my site but have heard it can be a strain on your database. KeywordLuv seems to be a “lighter” application so I may try that one first.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0
Jeet April 17, 2009 at 9:55 am

I thought it’s the other way round. CommentLuv uses Ajax to fetch the latest blog post. Keyword luv would have to do a little parsing of usernames while it renders links. I haven’t read the code so I don’t know how exactly they are implemented.

We bloggers all strive to get meaningful comments which will improve traffic and ratings. I’m sad to point out that while KeywordLuv and CommentLuv increase traffic and therefore also comments, they also tend to attract spammers

Yes, it’s just a negative tradeoff. When you think about it, any kind of incentive you make on your blog will always attract spammers.

Jeet June 17, 2009 at 5:25 am

True, any plugin that gives some link love to commentators will attract spam. Make a blog dofollow, spam increases, add keywordluv, more spam ;-) But with good spam control systems in place, I believe the spam can be handled.

Hi… I saw your post regarding commentLuv.. I agree with you that this kind of plugin can bring us more traffic or at least from other surfer on the net.. even though it will be more vulnerable for our site to get spam.. ;)

other kind of this plugin is keywordLuv.. this also has the same level of attraction.. =)

thanks for the posting, mate..

Comment Luv rocks. We use it on our main sites, and find it attracts more people to comment.

A good idea for preventing Spam: Just alter your comments template to tell them that the links are ‘nofollow’ and any comments in the keywords in the name field will not be approved.

Cheers,

Anthony.

Creating back links from commenting is a great tool. The best way to find these are to go an use googles operator for example: In the google search box enter the following: intext:”powered by wordpress” AND “KeywordLuv” OR “CommentLuv” this will pull out all blogs that provide the plugin and to filter out non blogs we incorporate the “powered by wordpress”
