Let Your Passion Be Your Secret Weapon

by Mike Tennant · 38 comments

There you are, staring blankly at the computer screen, not really caring about the words scrolling in front of you. It’s another weekday morning and all you can think about is how to fake it through the day. Ever been there? Yeah, me too. And let me tell you, it’s no way to go through life.

Take a look at everyone you know who’s wildly successful in their life. Be it in their work, family life, hobbies, whatever – anyone who you would consider a success at something. Do they enjoy what it is they’re doing?

Chances are, Yes, they Do

The best salespeople love to sell. They spend countless hours digesting all the different tricks and tips and best practices they can. The result? It becomes easy for them to close the deal.

It looks easy to the casual observer, especially since we don’t see the time put into it. But the true investment can come in many different forms. Sure, it may be time and money spent on their appearance, their style and even their social skills, but it all combines to enhance one important thing: selling.

Most of us non-sales people would take a look at the high-powered broker and think, “Man, if I could just close one big deal like that, I’d be able to take the rest of the year off.”

You know why the best salesmen don’t? Because they enjoy what they do. They enjoy the chase, the sell and ultimately the success that comes with their honed skill.

How Does this Apply to us, Online?

Here’s how – that passion is their secret weapon. It’s the true key to their success, and it’s the weapon that you can use to become successful yourself. Whatever they’re doing, they’re doing it first and foremost because they enjoy it. It’s their passion. That passion is the real driving force behind their success.

Take a look at the topics you’ve covered over the last couple of weeks. How much fun did you have writing about them? How interested are you in reading them?

These questions may seem trivial or even dumb to the accomplished writer or blogger, but they’re really at the root of success. If you don’t enjoy writing about a topic, your writing will inevitably suffer.

Where Content is King, the Apathetic Blog is Quickly Ignored

Not only will your writing suffer if you don’t care about your topic, but you’ll also find it more and more difficult to get yourself to sit down and churn out content. Writers block is much more prevalent in the unenthusiastic writers.

It’s simple to understand why. If you don’t have a passion for your topic, you’ll continually find other things to do rather than write. Sure, you’ll make yourself feel better by calling them “priorities” and saying they’re much more important tasks anyway. But people always find time for their passion – always!

If you’re passionate about something, you have no problem putting in the time and energy needed to excel. And it doesn’t just apply to writing or selling.

If you absolutely love playing poker, then you have no problem staying up all night long playing hand after hand online, or reading about new and different strategies. It’s fun for you. That’s why you do it, that’s why you spend time and money getting good at it, and that’s why ultimately you can be successful at it.

Are you passionate about what you’re doing?
If you’re a blogger, are you flat-out in love with your topic? Have you stayed awake all night engulfing yourself in every aspect of it? Have you sought out new info, sources, experts – really anything and everything related to it? If you haven’t, then maybe it’s time to figure out just what exactly it is you’re passionate about.

At the end of the day, all the various writing tips and tricks are great things to have at your disposal. Marketing your blog and promoting your content via social media is a wonderful tactic. But the real weapon that you have is that passion. That’s what will drive your success, or ultimately be the reason for your failure.

I totally agree Mike.

It is very important to be passionate about your niche and your online career. If you are really passionate about what you do, then it won’t look like work, and you will progress more quickly.

I agree.
It’s important to have a passion in the niche we choose or we will not be able to create great content.
Many people choose a niche based on how much money is there but i don’t think it’s the right way.

I usually say that passion and patience are the two most important things when it comes to blogging. Passion is one of the most important thing in blogging and you can’t survive in online business if you don’t have it.

You couldn’t have said it any better. Blogging is just like life, and life without passion is tantamount to living your day through like an automaton. And I also agree with you that if you like what you’re doing, or in this case what you’re writing about, words would just flow freely from your mind.

I think it would be hard for a blogger to come up with an awesome article if he himself has no interest on what he’s doing.

Awesome words!
I tell people all the time that blogging about something you have no passion for isn’t going to get you anywhere. See me, I love computers and I love making money online so blogging about making money online while on my computer is relaxing for me and something I do to get away from the world every now and then.

If you’re not passionate about what you’re doing, you’ll quickly realize that and so will your readers!

Hi Mike!

Love what you said about “where content is king, the apathetic blog is ignored.”

Too true. I equally dislike the “on the fence” blogs and the “here’s a list of things I just gathered from other blogs and reworded” type blogs as well. The people who are passionate about what they blog about generally are the ones who have something new to say….

That’s why I love opinionated blogs by people who love what they do.

Great post.

Hey Mike, great topic.

I think another aspect to look into with passion is how much you enjoy it even if others try to disrupt it. For example: say you absolutely love writing about music; you write daily because it drives you, you love it. But then comes another person that’s completely in for the money which sort of irks you.

If you’re really passionate about your subject you’ll just brush it off. While they do their own thing you keep at what you love to do regardless.

In all, you can’t let others get in the way of your passion. There will always be those that want to latch on or bring you down but as long as you can hold your head high you’ll always love what you do.

Murlu,

I think the cream always rises to the top. Readers can sense when the person who is writing the blog is passionate or not. I think people who are solely in it for money will run out of steam soon enough. It’s unlikely that blogger will have a dedicated readership because he doesn’t really care about his readers and they can sense that. It can be a good thing to have a money man involved in a blog if you’re trying to turn a profit, but someone there has to bring the knowledge and passion for the topic.

I have =)
-
I believe passion can be cultivated. its not a matter of what comes natural or not. It depends on how much you strive to believe and achieve.
-
Initially i had no idea whatsoever about making money online with affiliate marketing or even blogging. Well, i started out to learn ways of doing so and it wasn’t an easy thing to do as I practically have to start from zero and work myself up to the ‘top’.
well i could have eventually call it quit because i spent almost most my the night burning the midnight oil to learn about ways of making money online.

Instead, the more I learnt, the more entice I became about the opportunities provided online. From nothing, i had develop a passion out from something.. it isn’t really too hard to harness when you start believing in the possibilities of achieving so.

Passion is what will get you started and passion will eventually be something that will push you forward. Passion will be the sole motivator you ever need when times seems discouraging…
-
keep up the good work, buddy.
cheers

Alex, I completely agree. I think you have to be passionate about what you do in life in order to feel fulfilled. The same rules apply for blogging because as enjoyable as this can all be, it is a lot of work if you’re doing it right!

That being said, I don’t feel you necessarily have to be passionate about the topic of your blog if say selling is more your passion than writing. Team up with someone who is passionate about the topic and let your role at the blog be promotion and social media or attracting advertisers. Bring others on board to fill the necessary roles that they are passionate about as well. I think you can run a very successful blog using this approach.

It’s the passion that great bloggers have is what has made them so successful. It also keeps bloggers going through the good and the bad times. When you need to get that next post published, but you just can’t find the energy, it’s you passion and drive that pushes you that little bit further to do it and keep going.

I agree that passion will help, but do not use emotions too much. When making decisions you need to know facts and ignore emotions. It is best to remove emotions after success or failure. Both things are just part of the game. You must know that in order to achieve success.

It’s not hard to spot a blog that has a passionate writer. It makes all the difference. There is more life in a passionate blog because the writer truly cares about the subject and interacts with the community. It is also a lot easier to get through the tough times if you enjoy what you are doing.
