Did Google’s FeedBurner Crash and Burn?

by Janith · 21 comments

Okay, the world isn’t destroyed but if you haven’t realized — our subscriber count shows a big fat ugly zero! Everything is back to normal now thankfully.

When I saw it for the first time, I was seriously contemplating the fact that I might have written something so awful that it scared away ALL our subscribers — but luckily when common sense settled in, I figured out that was just a stupid thought.

Anyways, after ‘some’ thinking, the question that snowballed into a rage was ‘Why FeedBurner, Why?!’

It varies from showing “zero” to “N/A” at different times, even though they are pretty much the same thing. Well technically they aren’t the same thing, in fact I would actually appreciate it if they showed N/A. Then at least our new visitors can see something’s wrong.

Our blog wasn’t the only tell-tale sign of FeedBurner going awry. Alex confirmed that logging into the FeedBurner Admin Panel — even that showed null stats! At least we eliminated the fact that we done something to the coding accidentally or something like that.

I looked up on the issue and there has been similar problems dating all the way back to mid-2005! Nearly four years later, they are still facing the same problem. Time and time again, Google reps have just said “We tried something new, it didn’t work out and hopefully your stats will return after we fix this.”

I suppose that would be a generic reply, but still a reply none the less.

I shouldn’t be so harsh on the Big G. I mean they offer a lot of services for free and a lot of opportunity for many individuals across the globe. Still, they are pretty inconsistent when it comes to FeedBurner.

Hopefully they can fix it but till then none of our readers will get any RSS updates nor email updates — we are extremely sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanking You

Blogussion Duo :)

I see that the problem is not resolved yet. I even ‘moved’ some blogs to good. I think they would now want you to change the chicklet code :) )

It’s still persisting, but all hope is not lost!
Alex told me that the statistic on the FeedBurner panel returned to proper stats – just that it hasn’t updated on the site.

He said he’ll look into it once he gets back :)
Hopefully we’ll find a fix soon or it’s byebye to FeedBurner.

Luckily I had a look at your blog before I logged on to mine. I would have gotten a shock otherwise. Haha.

I didn’t realize that this had been fixed yet… I did actually jump when I first saw the zero, it freaked me out a bit. Have they released what happened yet?

@Ryan – Hopefully so, but I’m seeing more and more people reporting fixes and less people reporting faults – Good on ya Google! :)

@InsideWebmaster – Oh take my word when I say Google knew alright – I’ve personally seen in excess of at least 1,000 threads requesting help for this issue all over the shop. Everywhere from IM Forums to the Google Forums itself. Bloggers and webmasters a like were very quick to inform Google :P

@CheapMotorcycles – Yeah, this problem has been persistent for years now. I don’t see why they try to fix something that isn’t broken and end up stuffing it up :(

I’m curious on your opinion…. Are Feedburner stats actually useful?

Reply

Alex Fraiser February 2, 2009 at 9:16 pm

@FupDuckTV: I would say so, because Feedburner is a service that will count all of your subscribers. A high subscriber count makes a blog look good, so just keep building up Feedburner’s stats and you will see subscribers coming in more frequently to your blog.

It’s down again everyone, We are seriously contemplating move RSS Managers.

If it isn’t up with-in 24 hours from this comment – we will move and post an in-detail guide, so we can all ditch FeedBurner!

Don’t worry all, it’s fixed up and won’t be breaking anymore.

Luckily, I had a very few subscriber count and it did not matter if I lost them at this point in time. After all, site visits hold more value to me than a few subscribers to my post who hardly have time to read their feed readers.

Grrrr…..the feedburner thing drives me nuts! I will go from 700 subscribers one day to 200 the next! What the…? Hopefully one day it will be all better…

By the way, I really like your blog. That’s kind of weird to me b/c I’m a stay-at-home mom who drives a mini-van and is pretty much “old” (29), that and you are my brother’s age! Oh well, you all write well and I’m enjoying it!
