6 Powerful SEO Tips for Beginners

by Anil Gupta · 60 comments

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is a technique bloggers use to rank their blogs higher on search engines. It is easy for most professional bloggers to take a lot of SEO knowledge and other valuable information for granted. So when they write posts, it is very difficult for many newbie’s in blogging to learn and utilize.

Anil Gupta from ScopeForMoney blog share 6 useful SEO tips for beginners.

It is obvious that a blog which ranks higher in search engines will get more traffic drawn to it, so this makes knowledge of basic SEO very important. For the same reason I am writing this post that will teach you all that you need to know about basic SEO.

1. Title Link and Text

The link of your title should not be a number like — ( http://xyz.com/123.html ) or random letters of the alphabet. This is a poor SEO technique and will affect you rankings horribly. A good permalink structure does have an impact on SEO.

Instead, include the keywords of your post title in the title link. When we compare two URL’s http://xyz.com/123.html and http://xyz.com/powerful-tips-for-beginners.html, which makes more sense? Surely, the second URL makes more sense and it’s good from a SEO and user prospective.

So you should always try putting in some keywords related to the content on that page in your URL? Once you have chosen keywords to include in the URL, write out the title of your post. You will have some keywords to work, so it will make it a little easier on you.

When talking about one of the most important factors of good SEO, we talk about the title of the page. By looking at the title of your page in search engine results, people should be able to make decision about the kind of content they have in store on that page for them. So again include your main keywords in your title, but don’t make it spammy by including too many keywords or by making it read as gibberish.

2. Keywords

If you want your post to appear on search engines for certain keywords then make sure that these keywords appear often in your post. You should skillfully incorporate the keyword into your post five to six times — without making it look artificial for your readers.

But be careful, don’t use the keywords too much or the search engine spider may suspect spam. And if you are creating friendly content, have your keywords in your content where they fit in naturally. And please keep your keyword density lower than 2 percent!

3. Quality Links

It is important that your blog is linked from various high quality websites, as this will increase your number of backlinks (link to a previous post) which has great SEO benefits

At the same time, if your site is linked to undesirable sites such as link farms, bad neighborhoods, etc. then it will have a negative effect on your search engine rankings.

So link to authority and trusted websites only so that your website outgoing profile becomes stronger. And at the same time, get links from quality websites and blogs only. You can grab some quality links for your website by submitting your content on ezine publishing websites, guest posts, genuine blog commenting on the blogs in your niche and getting links from other bloggers.

4. Image Alt Tag

Always add an ALT tag to your images when you insert an image. This is important as there is a lot of traffic that is to be gained from indexed images as well.

An ALT tag is basically an alternative description of your image and it is crawled by search engine spiders.

Using ALT text with an image is important as people will be able to see some text when they are having image off on their systems or when see in an email body. And in the absence of ALT text, they will not get any information about the image you placed on a page or email content if they don’t prefer seeing image from an email or page they browse.

5. Use Anchor Text

When you interlink your pages in the blog, be sure to add proper anchor text. Anchor text is basically a word that is related to the post that you have linked it to; in other words: keywords.

Suppose you have a post about toy making, and use the anchor text, sell toys in any of your posts that link to it. When search engines visit your site and see that anchor text, they follow it, and know your page is about selling toys.

6. Interlink Your Pages

Bloggers are so obsessed with getting quality links from other blogs that they forget that the most basic step of SEO: interlinking pages.

This can do a number of things for you. By interlinking, you are basically selecting keywords in your article and linking them to another page on your blog. You can do this with old articles, pages on your blog, etc. This increases the pageviews on your blog, and makes it easier for search engines to travel deep into your blog.

What’s Your Tip?
There is a lot to good SEO, and what was talked about today is only the tip of the iceberg. What SEO tips have you learned from your own blog? Share them here, let’s make this the ultimate list of beginner SEO tips!

Don’t forget that when using anchor text with your keywords, you should vary the keywords so it’s not just the same over and over again.

Yes, targeting the single keyword has its benefits but if you also used “toys for sales”, “buy childrens toys” and others, you’ll be able to target a wider range of searched phrases.

Another thing is that Google has said it reads dynamic links but what happens is they don’t often go very deep into the subpages because the dynamic nature of the link breaks the flow of the pages.

Finally, the alt tag is a great tactic for search engine optimization – it’s certainly something you should skip over for both those with visual problems and SEO – but you’ll be hard pressed to convert visitors that are coming from a Google image search. These people are mostly looking just for the image and probably aren’t likely to stay around the read a post. Either way, it only takes a few seconds and helps with your overall SEO.

When it come to say about keyword selection, the most converted keywords are long tail keywords. Say you are selling diamonds, then the most converted keyword phrases for that keyword might be “buy diamonds”.

It is always recommended that if you are selling products then good to use long tail keywords.

Surely, using the same anchor text over over will invite Google to place some kind of penalty to our website. So it’s a wise decision to use your keywords in various formats and that’s look natural as well

Hey Anil,

Nice Post bro. These are some great post tips. I am already following all of them.
Before writing any topic, it should be necessary that topic should contain highly search volume keywords and your post will be optimized according SEO regulation, I mean well optimization in Keywords in headline, url, meta tags, internal link structure, page title etc.

And for point 3, Getting links from other blogs is very effective. I do “Roundup” every week to Link other blog posts (so i get linked too from others).
Thanks for sharing this great Post :) !!

Linking out to good websites is a way to make a strong outbound profile and at the same time, you are able to get some link back to your website quite naturally. But the problem with this approach is that, you have to keep on linking to other websites with such round-ups without any idea about the kind of fruits you will get from them

It’s always been my contention that some less then ethical “SEO consultants” portray it as a dark science and confuse people so you pay them $100 per hour for 10hrs worth of 15 minutes worth of work that almost anyone can do.

Rant over. lol

Study what top websites are doing. Check the kind of content they have on their landing pages, from where they are actually getting links and work towards getting links from their resources. Write some guest posts on blogs related to your website niche and get links for a choice of your anchor text.

Great summary on SEO for newbies. I am just teaching a friend that is starting with making money online the basics and have some serious issues with skipping ahead. SEO is something I do automatically without thinking about it.

Important thing for beginners is also that bad links _to_ your site can’t hurt you only linking out to them is a problem. Linking to authorities can help in SERPs.

A great tip to increase relevance is using synonyms for your keyword.

These tips are good for beginner and we need to follow some of them even they don’t have the largest impact in improving search engine ranking. Nevertheless, building quality link has the largest impaction in SEO, linking out to healthy site or getting inbound link from related niche site. That would help a lot.

Thesis WordPress Theme May 25, 2010 at 11:57 pm

Good post. Here’s a few things I do that have resulted in getting a post in either the #1 spot in Google, or within the top 5. I’m not saying these will achieve this result in isolation but I believe they have a lot to do with it. First thing I do is keyword research. Don’t guess what people are searching on. Know. And the only way to do that is researching the keywords. After you’ve found your keyword or phrase you want to rank for, do a search on Google for it, but put it in quotes. Take a look at the number of competing websites. In my opinion, anything over 100,000 will take more than just on-site optimizing to get on the first page. If you’re below that number you have a good crack at a top position. Then I basically do what Anil has recommended in this post. Two things that I didn’t see here and what I include is making sure I put the keyword or keyphrase in and H1 tag. I read posts saying that this is less and less significant, but I believe it makes a difference. Finally, I add the keywords to the meta description as well. Hope that’s useful to you…

Excellent summary of the basics, Anil, kudos. Anytime you wish to guest post some *Plain English* on my blogs, shoot me an email :)

Question – I always ask this when folks talk about keywording titles/permalinks…

Are you referring to the actual title/subject line, that readers see when they hit the post, or the actual permalink to the title which you can, and should change/shorten in the admin as your writing the post?

Alt tag tip – back in the day, SEO’s got “clever” by doing things like tagging a picture of a cat with “make money online”…..don’t get cute, nowadays Google has a special set of fellas they send to your house. ;)

Thanks Anil for this self explanatory tutorial. As for No2 on the topic which is keyword, my experience has shown that proper analysis should be taken before settling for a particular keyword. Most keywords tend to have high search volume but still would not generate any valuable traffic even when you are well ranked. This is maily becaus they are generic and are only been triggerd by other keywords which gives them false search value. So it is advisable to always subject a keyword to an exact match search value before deploying them to use.

Surely, title tag is one of the biggest on page factors when we talk about doing SEO for a website. And meta description is what is shown by search engines lots of time as part of our listing. People actually comes to our website after seeing title and description against our listing. So we need to work a lot on that, so most of people clicks on our search listings.

I have 2 tips to add : if you’re a new blogger or even if you’ve just set up a new blog, it can be really difficult to get links from really high profile sites. Instead you could attempt to do a link share with other blogs, of the same quality in your niche in order to get good quality links, with less of the hassle and more probability of you getting a site to link to you. The second tip I have is to ‘ping’ search engines which notifies them that you’ve posted new content. Personally I use pingomatic.com to do this and I noticed that on days where I post and don’t ‘ping’ Google barely acknowledges the article but on days when I do, Google definitely notices!
