What’s your New Year’s resolution? To lose weight? Make more money? Or finally crack the SEO barrier and get your site to page 1 for that awesome key phrase that gets loads of searches? If you said the latter, this post is for you!

As a result of working as a freelance SEO, I get a pretty close look at what is really going on in the SEO world, and right now I can tell you that it is slowly but steadily changing. Here are some tips on how you should proceed with the SEO on your site in 2012. Enjoy!

User Behaviour Matters

It has been talked about for a while, and often speculated on, but since Matt Cutts actually acknowledged it we can now be sure: Google is no longer just looking at what’s on your site and who’s linked to it. Any time they send you any traffic they are also going to be watching what that traffic does and how successful your page is at satisfying it.

What That Means For You
If your page appears in a search result and doesn’t get clicked on as often as it should, then your rankings are going to slip. In short, your page title and description matter more than ever, because these are the bits that display in the SERP’s. Get the meta data right by writing titles and descriptions that get users to actually click on your page and not the result above you. Click-through rate is THAT important.

Additionally, what if a user clicks on your result, but then returns to the search engine and clicks on a different result for the same query? To me that screams to Google that your site didn’t solve the user’s problem, so they tried again. Action plan? Check your bounce rates and navigation paths — there is no good or bad, it all depends on your niche, but one thing is for sure: actively trying to improve usability and bounce rates will help your site and your SEO.

Google Bot Chrome

This has been speculated upon but not proven, though the evidence is compelling (Google it). You know those previews that appear at the side of search results when you hover over them? They show you what a website looks like, and they even show you where the ‘fold’ is on the page.

The scary but amazing conclusion from this and some other evidence and anecdotal study is that Googlebot can actually render a page and ‘appreciate’ how a page actually looks, where content is and which bits have most precedence on the page.

What That Means For You
If your site looks spammy or just poor it might actually hurt you in SEO terms. So if the first thing in your content is a big ad, then Google ‘knows’ that you are prioritizing monetization over user satisfaction. Also, if your navigation looks messy or if your code has errors that make your images overlap your text Google will probably figure that out.

Remember that Google is constantly monitoring user behavior and finding patterns that might indicate good sites or bad sites. So if your site happens to have similar indicators as those found in ‘bad’ sites, you might get pegged as a baddy yourself. Maybe it’s time to review template through fresh eyes and make the necessary improvements.

Anchor Text Engineering Is A Risky Game

More and more Google is cracking down on link building that games the system. Think about it: if 100 sites linked to yours out of the goodness of their own hearts, without you asking them to, what are the chances of having more than a handful of them using exactly the right anchor text?

It’s likely that you might get 10 or 20 links using close keywords, maybe another 20 using vaguely related terms, and the other 60-70 might use ‘click here’, ‘more info’ or just your URL.

What That Means For You
So in reality those numbers will vary wildly depending on the context and maybe for certain pages your hit rate of anchor texts would be much better, but the point is, you are never going to naturally get a ‘perfect’ link profile. So when you try to build a perfect link profile you actually might be hurting yourself more.

The key takeaway here is that you need to vary it naturally, and sometimes that might even mean the occasional non-SEO’d link. There are of course many more intricacies to this which vary from niche to niche, but the focus is on making it natural and ethical; don’t try to game the system because you will lose.

In Summary

What I have discussed here is based on research, logic, SEO biz scuttlebutt, and mostly personal experience. That said, these ideas make sense to me. We can all see the direction Google is heading in, and it is clear that they have the technology available to work this way.

I hope that the ideas above will help you start thinking in a different way about how your site looks, reads, works, etc. Improving your site has always been a good goal to have, but now you have an extra incentive to do so.

And finally, link building is certainly not going anywhere. Quality link building is just as important as ever, it’s just that there are now a few newer and more important concerns to deal with as well.

The most basic component of optimizing your website is your link building campaign. Typically with a link building campaign, you should start with friends and associates that are bloggers. Reach out to them and offer link exchanges. These should be some of the easiest links you can obtain when just starting out.

In this article, Rob Stretch will share with you methods he uses to successfully reach out to other bloggers for backlinks, and help improve the traffic flow to his blog.

Eventually, however, you will have to branch out and start reaching out to publishers who you do not know to further your linking endeavors. This is the practice I will guide you through in this article.

How do you reach them?

A lot of bloggers are shy. Even though there are two different computers separating you from the other blogger, it’s still common to be a little shy. This is especially true if you are dealing with an authority in your niche.

Some common ways to reach out to other bloggers are:

Email (usually through a contact form on their site).

Twitter, and other social networking sites.

Their own blog, via the comments section.

A forum community.

I would generally categorize the sites who link back to you in 3 different categories: low, medium, or high quality. The quality of a site can be determined based on Google Page Rank, number of backlinks, overall visitors and users, RSS subscribers, look and feel of the site, and other guidelines. I use different link building methods when dealing with different classifications of sites.

1. Low Quality Sites

I target low quality sites on a large-scale approach. This does not mean sending automated emails or thousands of spam emails. What this means is maybe working from a pre-written email template, and customizing a few lines to fit the target site or blog.

Usually when targeting lower end sites, I spend a few days collecting email addresses, and the next few days sending out semi-personalized emails to the webmasters. These sites do not pass much link juice but satisfy your volume needs.

Warning: Don’t stoop too low
When categorizing sites as low quality, never stoop too low. If a site is under construction, spammy-looking, has horrible content, or is overall a horrible site, by all means don’t link to it. Linking to sites black-listed by Google can have a negative impact on your search engine results.

2. Medium Quality Sites

When targeting medium quality websites, I spend a little more time reading content on the site and getting a feel for their audience before emailing the webmaster. Each email at this stage is customized for the site owner.

I usually link previous samples of posts I have done to medium quality site webmasters. These sites pass a little more link juice and can be very useful in ranking your site for specific search terms.

3. High Quality Sites

For high quality sites, you really need to spend some time on your link proposal. This could mean writing free content and not even asking for an attribution link on the first post (or however their guest post guidelines are setup). This could even mean making phone calls instead of emails. However you choose to do it, you should know the targeted site like the back of your hand and know their reader base.

When it comes to emails – personalize them accordingly. Links from a high quality site are the ones that really get your site to start ranking high on the SERPs.

Keep in mind, quantity is not everything when it comes to link building. In every link-builder’s arsenal there lies a secret weapon: deep linking. Deep links are links to pages besides your homepage.

For example, VaMortgageCenter.com Reviews would be considered a deep link, because it is linking to the glossary. These allow for you to target more keywords, and allow for more pages of your site to be crawled more often by the search engines.

Here you can read more about my overview of a balanced link building campaign.

Crafting Your Email

Writing a persuasive email is an art these days. When contacting webmasters who you don’t know personally, use these guidelines:

Use an appropriate subject line (and address them by their name in the opening. Spell it right too).

Keep your message short

Keep your message simple

Articulate your cause

Provide accurate contact information

Experiment with different variations of content as well as different subject lines. Be active – measure your response rates based on different variables. When you notice a subject line starts returning a high percentage of responses, keep using that subject line!

Bottom line: try to get as many high quality sites as you can while avoiding sites with a negative influence.

What’s a Link Building Campaign to you?

There are many ways to build links to your blog, and asking for links is just at the tip of the iceberg. How do you build backlinks to your blog? Think carefully, because most of the time you are doing it, you aren’t even aware of it!

Promoting your blog is perhaps the most difficult part of blogging. After spending hours writing a great post and putting links and images in it you push the publish button and wait… but nothing happens! Your post is live on the web and no one is clamoring to read it! You can’t even get a comment!

That’s why today I am going to outline some very simple new ways to promote your blog. Some of these methods you will have heard of and I am going to guess that many of them will be completely new. The important part is that you try them out and see what works for you and your blog. Some of these things wont be interesting to you, that’s okay. For this reason we came up with 169 ways to promote your blog out of the ordinary.

Branding

An important element to think about as you start to go through this list and try the new promotional methods out is branding. The key with many of these things is to get your name and url (web address) seen by as many people as possible for as little money as possible. You don’t want to spend $1 million dollars to get 2 new visitors so think about the efforts required for each of these as well. Most of them require little time, expertise or money. Some are ridiculous and we warn you to try them at your own risk! The better the domain name the easier it is to do try these methods out. Try to find a domain name that is short and easy to remember.

For some very important and basic promotion methods, read our popular post on Blog Promotion. It outlines dozens of promotion methods you must be instituting to promote your blog online. So read the basic post if you are beginner and then go down this list and find what you like.

Marketing Apparel – Get a t-shirt made with your blog’s logo and URL on it. You can also offer the t-shirt as a prize in a contest on your blog. If the t-shirt’s design is pretty cool, the winner will advertise for you wherever they go!

Yard Sale - Sell items you no longer want and make sure to put up a sign in your yard with the words “Sponsored by ______.com”

Teach a Local Class – Go to your local community center, college, primary schools, etc. and offer to teach a free class about your blog’s niche. If you blog about cars, teach a class about how to change a tire. There are a lot of ways to build face-to-face relationships in your area.

Get on Your Local News – Find a way to get in your local newspaper to build some hype around your blog and what you are doing online. An easy way to do this is by writing an editorial or showing up to important local events.

Farmer’s Markets – Give away food at local events like farmer’s markets, conventions, fairs, car shows, or other local events. People will stop by your booth and will accept a handout with your product or blog on it for a small bit of food.

Go to the Beach – Enjoy yourself and while there etch your url into the sand. Just be sure to watch out for the tide. – Works in snow too!

Write on a Dirty Car Window – It only takes a second!

Host a Snowball Fight! – Unless it is illegal in your state. This is a fun way to get people to have fun and with a little hot chocolate sponsored by your blog it’s a quick way to get your name out as well.

Yard Sign – Campaigns do it all the time, just put a very nice sign in your window or yard, be sure to check the rules of your city or neighborhood though.

Post Flyers – Stick a poster about your website on your work or school’s notice-board. You probably want to wait until no-one is around before you try this one.

Public Browser Trick – Go to your local library, internet cafe or computer lab and set your blog’s domain name as the default browser homepage on all the computers you can easily access. Just make sure not to violate any terms of use.

Router Trick – This is an easy one to do and can get your neighbors interested in your blog. All you have to do is name your wireless router after your blog and try to get your neighbors interested. Who knows, you might have a fellow blogger next door.

Blank Business Cards – You can hand out a business card whenever your blog comes up or whenever you bring it up in conversation. Be sure to mention your blog to more people offline.

Local Meeting – Organize a meet-up for webmasters and bloggers in your area and use it as an opportunity to network.

Backpack Patch – Get yourself a custom patch to put on your bag or backpack and travel with it everywhere.

Niche Hot-Spots – Leave fliers or posters at hot spots for your niche. For example: If you have a music blog then post flyers at a local music shop, concert venue, etc.

Take Out a Local Ad – Local ads in newspapers are often pretty cheap and local papers have a circulation of thousands. One more way to be found.

Wear your URL – Create for yourself and friends custom t-shirts or hats with your URL on it. People will want to know more and you will be creating conversations about your blog.

Use a Talent – You Draw? Make Crafts? Sing Songs? Find a way to expand your visitors by showcasing a talent which exposes your blog.

Homeless Humor Approach – Why do your advertising approaches have to be boring? Try something funny and exciting

Hire a Consultant – Find out specifically how you can get your blog going and get help from an expert. I have consulted many clients and the key is for bloggers to be open and willing to listen. Many consultants are pretty inexpensive considering the time they save you from having to learn it on your own.

Hire a Publicist – Have them take care of your PR for you. They are expensive though so be aware.

Bumper stickers – There a millions of drivers so get a bumper sticker for your blog and mail them or sell them to your blog readers. Every time they drive anywhere they will be promoting you.

Have a Party – Tell local bloggers, friends, and family that your blog is sponsoring a party with food, drinks or whatever you want. Then when everyone comes in hand them a card with your blog on it. It will create some great buzz offline.

Invite Offline Friends – Often we forget that many of our friends and associates offline might be interested in our niche too. Just mention your blog the next time your offline friends ask you what you are up to.

Advertise on the Radio – It is generally pretty cheap and very easy to set up. If you have something non-web people would want get talking.

Advertise on TV – If you have product to sell and 30 second commercial might be a great way to get people online to check out your site.

Sell Your Product on an Infommercial – If people can sell inflatable kitchen knives and tons of other wacky stuff, you can sell your product too!

Put Your URL on Your Desktop – If you are like me you use your computer outside of your house at school, library or in public. People will see it and may visit your site.

If you have a “static” website that doesn’t dynamically update with RSS feeds, then you could be missing out on some traffic benefits. In this post, Jeet from Get Links Pro goes over how to make your content RSS feed accessible so you can use CommentLuv to promote your pages.

RSS was one of the most hailed technology 2 years ago. It promised to change how we read news, and how search engines determine new content and of course it completely changed how newsletters work.

The folks at CommentLuv used this powerful technique and made an amazing plugin that facilitates rewarding blog readers and commentators in a whole new way. Before this, blog commenting was not as exciting and an attempt to get a keyword rich backlinks to your site using blog comments was considered SPAM. Backlinks to internal pages on the blog was a distant dream.

However, CommentLuv changed that. It inserts commentators latest blog post with title in comment and thus rewards loyal readers and commentators. It uses an RSS feed on the blog to find the latest blog post.

But, what if you don’t have a blog, but a manually updated (static) website? Blogs get an extra link whenever they leave a comment because they have an RSS feed setup already. I will share a trick here that can be used to get an extra link for any site on CommentLuv enabled blog even if you don’t have a blog so to speak. I am using this trick for my directory list, and it works fine when CommentLuv is around.

Creating the XML file

The first step is to make a RSS feed file called feed.xml (or whatever you want. Just make sure the file extension is .XML) using the template given below. Choose a good title for your page that you want to show up in comments, it need not be same as the actual page title.

You should keep minimum 3 items for CommentLuv to recognize your RSS feed. You may choose to add more RSS tags like author, publish date, website title/URL etc.

Free Directory List

Title 2

Title 3

Once you have made this file and have uploaded it to your server, you need feed auto-discovery process to recognize your feed. Assuming you uploaded the file at www.domain.tld/feed.xml you need following code in your homepage header.

You may choose a different location or file name for the RSS feed we just prepared and should be substituting the RSS URL in following code accordingly.

Upload this change and you are now ready to get more than one link when you comment on CommentLuv blog. You can get links to any internal page you like. If you know a little bit of programming, you could randomize the link that will appear on the RSS feed.

If you have a blog on a separate domain or in a sub directory, you can also use the auto-discovery code on your main site to enable RSS discovery.

You could also register at CommentLuv and choose the feed to show for your comments. But nothing will give you as much control as this.
