When was the Last Time You Appreciated Your Own Work? — Wired Weekend

by Alex · 33 comments

The weekend is finally here, and I hope you all have some great plans for it! In this issue of Wired Weekend, I just want you to really do some self-reflection and look back at your work. We are always trying to constantly improve our blog with new things, but when was the last time we looked back at the things that got us to where we are today?

It’s not easy to keep your blog constantly updated, and it drives many bloggers crazy when they don’t update their blog and stress themselves out over writing a post. We write to our blogs everyday, but when’s the last time you just sat back, looked at your blog posts and just felt proud at all of the work you have done?

You may seem this post as something that is just here to take up space for the weekend, but there is actually some significant value in what I’m trying to do here. I want you guys to look at the dashboard of your admin panel, run through the archives of your blog and just look at everything you have achieved over the lifespan of your blog.

I do this from time to time here, and am absolutely amazed at all I have done. It really inspires me to get into a working mood and I am surprised I don’t do it more.

As I write this post, the dashboard of Blogussion looks like this:

Blogussion Dashboard

Just take 10 – 15 minutes out of your work/relax time this weekend and go through your blog. Appreciate what you have done, as it can really get you inspired to get going and make it all even better.

So Tell Me This…
After you looked over your blog, what did you see? Are you happy with what you have done, or are you yearning for more? Show me the same statistics I have shared with you about your blog — how many posts you have published, how many comments, etc.

It’s funny, your exactly right. I’ve grown a celebrity fan site of mines for about almost a year now (soon to be it’s 1 year anniversary). It’s crazy to notice the little differences of what it use to be when I had it for 5 months (grossing about 500 unique visits a day) to today (grossing 2500 unique visits a day) and that’s not even looking at the keyword positions it ranks for.

I think the biggest amount of accomplishment is to notice change of only 10-20 comments on your dashboards to 1,000+ comments on your dashboard :) Really makes me feel like I’m doing something right.

Crazy how time flies when you’ve got success on the mind isn’t it!?

I’m also amazed at how fast those stats grow. Like, I broke 100 posts on here a long time ago and it didn’t even feel like I had written all of that in such short time. It’s just such an accomplishment to realize you have done all of these things, I’m with you man.

Murlu June 4, 2010 at 6:17 pm

I actually did this earlier today. I’ve been so busy working on writing, networking and promoting my blog that I haven’t taken the time to look at what I’ve done.

When I did it astounded me. I’m now at 40 posts and the blog is just over a month old now – it really surprised me because I didn’t realize how much I had been writing!

I also just had a major breakthrough on the blog already. Commentors are now directly talking to each other, answering questions – I love that, to know people are really getting into it.

Alex, your stats are really amazing. That’s a ton of comments, I wish I was reading the blog from the beginning but I’ll definitely be keeping up with it from now on.

Nice point you’ve brought up here. I’ve just started blogging, so my concepts are slightly out of topic, but for me, this idea applies to digital art. My works get good reviews from friends and that usually ‘does it’ for me. However, it has been some time since I gave myself a pat on the back.

After i’ve finished a post or even a full web design i quite often sit back and feel proud of what i have done. However a couple of days later i’ll be working or looking round the net and feel “if only i’d have done that or added that”. Then i usually start stressing over it.

Hi Alex,

I do not currently have a blog. Although, I am strongly thinking of starting one.

I look at my traffic for my website, and that’s how I get ‘motivated’. It has been steady and increasing slowly.

Well, Congratulations on your stats! You are really on to a successful path!

Your stats give me motivation, and shows that it CAN be done!

All power to you Alex.

Kindest,

Great post, Alex. I totally agree with you that you should look back and appreciate what you’ve done in the past to get some inspiration for the future. Actually, I’m writing a post on blogging inspiration right now, so this post itself was some inspiration for my writing!

Hi Alex. I do this a lot. Re-reading my posts keeps me up-to-date on what I have written before and where I’m lacking. It also helps me spot past typos that have been online for years. lol And it helps me see where I can interlink my old articles to the newer ones. It does amaze me at the quantity of content I have published on my site. As just about every visitor tells me, it’s a wealth of information. That’s a great thing to hear. Still impressed that I have more in me! :)

Which is also why I love coming here. The information and design of this site is killer. You always give great advice and have insane amounts of content.

I’m surprised that you’ve approved every single comment. That’s cool. I can’t believe that you don’t get any spam… or you just have a great spam detector!

Sometimes when I do a really good post it is obvious to me right away and I take time to appreciate it then. I think a lot of us get carried away in the process, you make a very good point. We should take some time away from just mashing the keyboard.

We’re happy. We do not have the comment you have Alex, but we are more into traffic than we are comments. Some of the stuff we write about drives traffic, but is rather bland to read.

The last time I appreciated my work was just yesterday. I say this because I got my head on straight and pretty much relaunched my whole online presence. Many times starting from scratch to realize what you truly need to do is better than fixing a broken/ unfocused item.

I tell about this in my newest post (thanks CommentLuv). Additionally, I’m appreciating myself that I had the guts to redo everything, but when I have a weak community and really want to people to know the true me… things need to change. Wish me the best!
