When at first starting a blog, many people have “making money online” as their sole purpose or at least in the back of their mind. I know you have heard this before, but you must blog about something you’re passionate about.
People that do start of with ambitions of making it big online, usually give up soon — simply because, after picking the “highest paying niche” — they find it impossible to keep producing quality content in the long run. Usually within the first few months, most of these so-called “bloggers” have already given up.
There are many reasons on why passionate bloggers will succeed over the obsessed impersonators. Blogging is far more complex in its structure than the “slap content, earn money” idea that many have assumed it to be. It takes time, determination and perseverance over long periods of time to even deem yourself successful.
If you take a look around, today’s top-bloggers in a wide range of niches; all have been around for a very long time. This is just an reflective indication, that those whom hang in there — we’ll make it to the top.
These are just some of the reasons that I believe why you should blog with a passion. Take them into consideration and it might help you realize why passionately blogging is the key to success.
- A plethora of blogs are created every day. I’m talking thousands here. There is no possible way you can create a blog about something you are not passionate about or don’t know much about and also stand out.
- If you are not passionate, you will not update your blog. If you are not excited about your topic, you will not write — simple as that. If you don’t write; your blog joins the thousands and thousands of previously abandoned blogs. If you set out to make money and don’t make money quickly, you will swiftly grow bored and tired of writing.
- Blogs are supposed to be fun. Sure most people want to make money, but bloggers like what they do. Otherwise, do you think they could bear to post daily?
- Content equals money. Without great unique content you cannot make money. If you don’t know about your topic or you’re not passionate about it — you can’t create constantly updated unique content.
- Blogs take a long time to make money. If your not in to blogging for the long run, you might as well not try.
Do you know why so many blogs are abandoned?
Have you done this yourself? How can you prevent it?
Take a step back from all the empty promises and overemphasized hype about blogging, and spare a moment to think. Then ask yourself the following questions;
- What is it that you know a lot about?
- What would you like to write about?
- What will you never get bored of?
When you honestly answer these questions, you have your niche. After many posts later, many comments later, responding and helping your members, and a good design — you can then start making money.
I hope you realize that blogging with a passion is truly the only way about it. So, get our there and start blogging about things that make you happy!

You’re completely right. Too many bloggers think they are going instantly make money off their blog. Like you said, it takes time and persaverance. I would like to stress the fact that before you make money, you need to build a community first. Good post!

Nice work on your first guest-post, TheBlurr! Glad to have you on aboard our writing adventures
I have to second what Evan said, that way to many bloggers think blogging is all about money ~ which couldn’t be further from the truth.
It takes a lot of time and effort to run a blog and if your doing it JUSt to make money, it’s very likely you’ll give up very soon.
Just like you’ve said, passion is the only thing can differentiate true-bloggers from desperate-money-makers
Thanks, Janith and Evan. I’m glad you agree with my post.

If I can add, most (not all) readers of blogs are pretty intelligent and particular about the blogs they read. Readers are discerning and look for those blogs that ooze passion. Why would anyone stick with a blog that’s just in it for money?
I think one reason it takes such a long time to get a successful blog going is that trust and loyalty take time to build, especially given the huge number of ‘hit-and-run’ blogs appearing and disappearing. People easily spot ‘blogging-by-numbers’ and ‘in-it-for-easy-money’ blogs.
Nice post! Ian

Great input Ian Petey. I completely agree, with so many blogs around readers make sure that before subscribing that the person who owns the blog is passionate and knows what he/she is talking about.
Yes Dennis Edell, I agree but your passion does need to have a market if you are looking to make money, but i believe that most blogs are made with passion in mind, not money. If you don’t have a passion then don’t blog. Of course, if you have more than one passion you can look for the niche that is most profitable. If you do have a passion that isn’t marketable i still say go for it. You may not have as much money, but I’m sure other people are interested in what your interested in so you will not be writing no one.

If you think that “without great unique content you cannot make money” I suggest that you Google on things like “credit cards”, “quick weight loss” and music lyrics. Take a look at the Drudge Report. People who run these sites make considerable cash with mediocre, and often duplicate, content.
Blogs can be fun, that’s true. However, something being fun doesn’t have much to do with making money in most cases. Actually, something being fun usually costs money for most people. If you want to blog for fun, then yes, write about something you have a passion about. If you want to blog to earn a living, write about things that will help you do that.

I guess you can make money off of a popular niche that you know a lot about if you can find a way to motivate yourself. However, just speaking generally writing for a major niche your not passionate about won’t make you money. Think about it, the popular sites in major niches are made by experts on the subject. They also have to have great SEO and constant content. Without a passion it seems hard to compete.
Also, duplicate content, even content reworded is usually tracked down by search engines. It is also, true that many people who blog even end up costing themselves money. If they are just blogging for fun why not just get a sub domain such as yoursite.wordpress.com.
Thanks for the comment

I believe you shouldn’t be a blogger if you are doing it just to make money. If you find a great niche that pays well, yet you hate it then I would personally say leave it alone. Unless you are having fun with what you are doing, why would you want to keep boring yourself?

Hey i agree with what you are saying, newbie bloggers think they can start the blog and earn money from the very first day of launching the blog.. i have a blog which when i started, didnt make money for around 6 months
Most blogs are abandoned because people get the idea that making money on the internet is easy and olny takes 5 minutes to do. Which is not the case – to make money online you need to work just as hard or harder than in the real world. I totally agree that you need to be passionate about what you blog and you will not succeed if you are not. I love blogging , SEO and internet marketing that’s why i blog about it. I found it interesting and as i learn t about it i blogged it

I agree with your post to a certain extent. I mean, you should put effort into your blogs, but being passioniate is something completely different. Let me use myself as an example, if you would.
During my time as a webmaster, I’ve had a lot of blogs. Some of them I’ve enjoyed, some of them I haven’t. OK, yes, I’m being slightly vague here… let me try a bit harder and cut to the chase
I find that as long as you enjoy some of your projects, you’ll be fine. When I first started, I had a sport blog as that was what I enjoyed. It wasn’t successful, and in the end I gave it up because of this, but I did enjoy it. After that, I went through a phase of starting a lot of blogs that were there to purely make money. I did make a fair amount, but never really enjoyed it, and therefore stopped blogging for a bit. Once I came back to blogging, I’ve realised that as long as you have something you look forward to, it’s fine to have blogs you aren’t passionate about. I have 3 blogs I own at the moment. Two of them I couldn’t really care less about, I only keep them because they make me money. The third (and newest), I’m genuinley passionate about, and when I’m updating the other two, the thought of working on the third blog is what gets me through the other two.
Sorry if that didn’t make any sense at all… I tried my hardest. lol

It’s like my dad used to tell me: do what you love. Why start a blog about something that you aren’t passionate about? You’re right, you’ll abandon it!

There really is no secret technique leading to success. It’s the extra mile that differentiates winners from quitters. Most people quit. Be different. Let it motivate you that you can be different from all those quitters. You can then boast about your conquest to yourself.
I do really agree!
Passion and dedication equals success! Keep it up.
